Midday Power Saver program launches in Victoria

From 1 October 2026 Victorian households with a smart meter can get free electricity every day between 11am and 2pm through the Midday Power Saver. Here's who can get it, and how.
What is the Midday Power Saver program
Electricity you use between 11am and 2pm costs you nothing, every day, including on weekends. You can use up to 24 kilowatt hours free in that window each day (although some retailers will choose to offer more).
It works a lot like the offer that started in New South Wales, South East Queensland and South Australia on 1 July. Victoria's version has its own name and its own rules, so ask for it as the Midday Power Saver.
You don't need solar panels to sign up for the Midday Power Saver
The free hours come from your retailer, not from solar panels on your roof. You don't need panels, and you don't need to own your home.
Who's eligible for Midday Power Saver
You can sign up if:
- you live in Victoria. And it’s for homes, not businesses
- you have a smart meter. Not sure? Here's how to tell if you have a smart meter
- you can choose your own electricity company. Some apartment buildings, retirement villages and caravan parks buy power in bulk and sell it on to residents. If that's your building, you can only sign up if you're able to pick your own retailer
Who gets the most out of Midday Power Saver
The saving depends on how much you can move into the free hours.
The dishwasher, washing machine, pool pumps, hot water, and car charger are the biggest factors. Overall, the Victorian Government estimates households can save hundreds or even over $1,000 per year using the Midday Power Saver.
However, it’s not necessarily right for everyone. Electricity outside the free hours (especially at peak times) can cost a more than on other plans. If your household uses most of its power in the evening, you may be better off where you are — but you can use our tool to check in under a minute.
How to sign up to the Midday Power Saver
You can ring your electricity retailer and ask for the Midday Power Saver by name.
Before you do, remember to compare the cost of the whole bill, not just the free hours. The state government’s free comparison site, Victorian Energy Compare, can help you understand the total bill comparison.
For a faster option, our tool takes about a minute and estimates whether it’s a good option for your household.
